RMDs are mandatory withdrawals from tax-deferred retirement accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s. While these accounts offer years of tax-deferred growth, that benefit doesn’t last forever. Once you reach a certain age (currently 73 or 75 depending on your birth year), the IRS requires that you begin taking annual distributions, which are then taxed as ordinary income.
